Everything will work out for good…
…just not necessarily good for you.
Good for God? Yes! Stop thinking life is all about you. I hope your will is God’s will; it sure makes life feel like you’re getting your way at everything.
Nothing more, just wanted to start posting again!
What If the Universe Is Finite?
Thinking back to my high school days, there was only one class I feared and avoided at all costs.
Physics.
Now, it’s one of the most interesting areas of science to me that I know nothing about. But that’s what fear buys you, whether it’s fear of asking a girl out, fear of a subject of study, or just fear of the unknown. Fear buys you ignorance.
Much like centuries ago when scientists and others believed the Earth was flat and finite. Of course we all know now the Earth is round (and still finite) but you can travel in one direction for an infinite amount of time around the round surface of the Earth. Or in the case of my Suburban, 420 miles on $70 of gas. But what do we know of the universe?
I know, heady stuff for a Sunday morning, almost navel gazing, but bear with me.
The universe has almost always been thought of as infinite space, almost like the ‘world is flat’ theory but without an end that we can fathom. But what if the universe was round, and we were, this time, on the inside of the sphere instead of on the surface?
Check out this quote from an article in PhysicsWeb (I know, I’m a closet geek):
Most astronomers think that the universe is infinite, but recent measurements suggest that it could be finite and relatively small. Indeed, as Jean-Pierre Luminet describes, we could be living in an exotic universe shaped rather like a football (soccer ball.)
Did Jean-Pierre and I just blow your mind? Pass the Cheetos.
In the article "A cosmic hall of mirrors", Luminet’s theory is outlined as follows:
At a Glance: Cosmic topology• There are three possibilities for the curvature of the universe: space can be flat, spherical or hyperbolic
• The geometry of the universe depends on its curvature and also on its topology, which governs the way space is connected and so determines if it is finite or infinite
• Measurements of the cosmic microwave background constrain the curvature of the universe and provide hints about its topology
• Recent data suggest that the universe might be multiply connected, like the left- and right-hand sides of the screen in a computer game
• Since the early 1990s the number of cosmo-topologists around the world has grown to more than 50
See the second to the last one? Connected like a video game, i.e. he’s comparing the universe to a game of Asteroids where if you fly your ship off the right hand side of the screen, you appear on the left and vice versa.
See. Playing vids at the 7-11 was a better investment than going to physics class.
